I deferred my life to the future. His comments on smoking were used worldwide, Philip Morris Tobacco company used Selye's statements on the benefits of smoking to argue against the use of health warnings on tobacco products in Sweden. However, with a bit of balance and a sense of openness, these agreements can each be transformative and stress-relieving. It is a revolutionary, research-infused guide to transforming how readers can engage with stress on an individual and organizational level with an emphasis on the individual.

Sokoloff demystifies the complicated, often esoteric principles of these philosophies and proves that combining our pragmatic, Western view of the world with the wisdom of the Far East allows us to gain the best of both worlds. Work Without Stress shares that insight along with the science that supports it. Leaving empty spaces in your schedule will give an opportunity to relax. We think if we were as successful as they are, as rich as they are, as talented as they are, we would be as happy as they are.

Selye conceptualized the physiology of stress as having two components: a set of responses which he called the " general adaptation syndrome ", and the development of a pathological state from ongoing, unrelieved stress.

Later he developed the idea of two "reservoirs" of stress resistance, or alternatively stress energy. The system whereby the body copes with stress, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis HPA axis system, was also first described by Selye.
